ACCRA, Ghana: Italian President Giorgio Napolitano arrived in Ghana's capital late Sunday to begin a three-day visit during which he will discuss the West African country's economic potential with the president and lawmakers.
Napolitano and Ghanaian President John Kufuor plan to discuss economic development ideas that the two countries can cooperate on, Foreign Ministry official Kwamena Sackey said.
Though the former British colony struggles to provide basic services to much of its citizenry, Ghana is also an economic engine for the region — with a bustling capital city in Accra along with exports of gold, timber and cocoa.
Kufuor greeted Napolitano as he arrived at the airport, accompanied by a 21-gun salute and drummers and dancers.
Napolitano, who comes at the head of a 37-member Italian delegation, is also scheduled to address Ghanaian parliamentarians during his visit, and tour a training center for international peacekeeping forces.
