Saboba-Chireponi Assembly Looses Revenue Due to Floods

INFORMATION REACHING The Chronicle indicates that Saboba, the district capital of the Saboba-Chereponi District in the Northern Region has become an island following the heavy rains that continue to hit the northern parts of the country, thereby halting the Assembly's avenue for raising revenue.

Saboba, which is a border town with Togo, located along the Oti River in the north eastern corridor of the Northern Region, has lost all the roads that linked the town with other towns like Yendi, Wapuli and Chereponi to the floods.

Mr. Abass K. Beacther, the District Coordinating Director of the Saboba-Chereponi District Assembly told The Chronicle in a telephone interview on Monday that, the two major roads, Saboba-Yendi road through Kpalba and Saboba-Yendi road through Wapupli have become un-motorable due to floods and the appalling nature of the two major roads has affected revenue generation by the Assembly.

He said the water level at the Kpalba steel bridge was at the last tip at both ends.

Mr. Beacher who is also a Deputy Director of Administration said the recent flooding of some portions of Saboba-Chereponi road, had aggravated the situation. This, he noted, had also affected business and made access to health centres, market centres and other social facilities impossible.

He revealed that that as part of the District Assembly's efforts to addressing the situation, the Executive Committee had met and set up a committee to formally report to the Regional Highway Director/Engineer and the Department of Feeder Roads for appropriate measures to be taken.

Meanwhile, a source in Saboba also told this Reporter that following the heavy downpour last Thursday and Friday, market trucks could not travel on either of the two roads linking Saboba to Yendi. Stranded passengers had to travel on tractors as these were the only means of transport.

The source said referral cases from health facilities at Chereponi, Wapuli, Kpalba and other health centers to Saboba were also a major concern to the District Health Directorate and that referral cases from Chereponi and Wapuli were being directed to Yendi instead of Saboba.

It said while there were boats on the Kpalba side to convey passengers across, travellers on the Wapuli road had to swim across, saying, it is a survival of the fittest.
