A Kimberley Process review mission arrived in Ghana on March 26, 2007 to assess the West Africa country's efforts to combat conflict diamonds.
Canada is heading the mission which includes representatives from the European Community, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the World Diamond Council and Global Witness.
The European Commission, which took over the chairmanship of KP at the beginning of 2007, said the mission will focus upon improving Ghana's controls to ensure that conflict diamonds from neighboring Côte d’Ivoire do not pass through Ghana or any other KP member country.
A joint KP–UN mission to Ghana in 2006 reported that the country was susceptible to Ivorian conflict diamonds and Ghana officials, at the request of the KP Gaborone Plenary in November, undertook to implement an action plan to strengthen controls over its diamond industry.
KP technical experts have visited Ghana during January and February to examine exports and provide technical assistance in the implementation of the action plan and the mission arrived at Ghana's request, "to demonstrate the robustness of its control systems and its commitment to the Kimberley Process," the EU Commission said.
The mission is taking place with the full co-operation of the Ghanaian authorities and in collaboration with the United Nations in view of the UN ban on diamonds from Côte d’Ivoire, the Commission added.
